Gran Cenote, near Tulum (Riviera Maya, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico) is the first cenote I’ve ever explored and the first time I’ve snorkeled – oh and recorded video while snorkeling for the first time.
Cenotes are amazing sinkholes in limestone rock that bring groundwater to the surface. Some include caves and tunnels. Usually, you have to climb down to the surface via stairs, a ladder or just the rock face; but from what I understand some you can just swim into from another body of water. And if you scuba dive, you can explore much further…
Swimming and snorkeling in a cenote is the most refreshing thing to do after a hot Mexican day, especially if you just spent hours exploring Chichen Itza, as we had on this day (during week 261).
The the rock formations above and below the water and the fish, turtles and bats you get to see in Gran Cenote are really just a bonus on top of the refreshment.
The video was shot with a GoPro Hero and an iPhone 5. It should be the last Mexico video for a while – at least I hope to have time soon to shoot something new…
